Winter

Off to the Audi FIS Ski World Cup

December 2018

Every year in December, the world of skiing looks to South Tyrol and Alta Badia. For this is the time when four races of the Men’s Alpine Ski World Cup take place in our home country.

The Giant Slalom on the Gran Risa Piste in Alta Badia and the Downhill Race in Val Gardena count amongst the great classic competitions of Alpine skiing.
From the winter season 2015/16 onwards, there has also been a night-time Parallel Giant Slalom taking place on the Gran Risa Piste.
The Gran Risa Piste has already witnessed the successes of the great stars of skiing: Ted Ligety, Ingemar Stenmark, Mark Girardelli, Bode Miller, Marcel Hirscher and, of course, Italy’s most successful ski racer, Alberto Tomba.

During the World Cup skiing weekend, La Villa, the place where the Alta Badia world cup races are happening, is at fever pitch.
The very special atmosphere when thousands of skiing enth

usiasts from the whole of Europe come here to encourage their favourites and to celebrate with them, must simply be experienced to be believed!
Very experienced skiers will find their high expectations met when they tackle the challenging, and technically highly interesting, Gran Risa Piste. With an altitude differential of 448 metres, a length of 1,225 metres and its steepest incline 53%, it is considered one of the best pistes for giant slalom world cup races.
The start for this literally breath-taking descent is situated at an altitude of 1,871 metres, just below where the black and the red runs down the Piz La Ila separate. Its entire length runs along a narrow track through a pine forest. Because the piste is so steep and as it is usually in the shade, it remains covered in thick ice and is considered one of the trickiest stretches in world cup skiing.
